La Danaïde - Auguste Rodin Collection Figurine -  Parastone - 8 cm

Greek mythology tells the story of Danaïde and her forty-nine sisters who were married to the fifty sons of Aegyptus. Their father Danaos, who was in conflict with Aegyptus, instructed his daughters to murder their husbands on their wedding night. As punishment for their grave crime, they are condemned to the underworld, where they must eternally fill vats with water that never fill up. Rodin saw this story as an opportunity to visualize the total exhaustion of the female body. The marble accentuates the flowing lines and reflects the aesthetics of Art Nouveau. (1885)

Auguste Rodin (1840-1917-France) Between Romanticism and Impressionism, this idiosyncratic Frenchman created some of the most famous pieces in sculpture.

Attributes: white sculpture depicting a kneeling, nude female figure curled forward on a textured base that resembles rock or draped fabric. The body is stylized and compact, with softly rounded forms and subtle muscle definition, while the head rests to one side in a calm, introspective pose.
