Ram Boeotia - Greco - Roman Art Collection Figurine -  Parastone - 7 cm

This charming statuette probably originates from the temple of the Kabairoi in Thebes. Thebes is the most important city in the region of Boeotia, which was a major political and military centre for a long time. Its role as Athens' counterpart came to an end when the city was completely destroyed by Alexander the Great in 335 BC. In mythology, Thebes is known as the setting for many stories, including those of Oedipus and Dionysus. The ram is probably a votive offering from someone involved in the important wool industry, dedicated to the Kabiri, a mysterious group of gods originally from Phrygia.
