Description

Asklepios - Greco - Roman Art Collection Figurine -  Parastone - 22 cm

(Epidaurus, Greece 4th-2nd century BC)

Asclepius, son of Apollo and Cronus, known as Aesculapius in Roman mythology, is the (demigod) god of medicine and father of Hygieia, goddess of health, and Panacea, goddess of medicine. The staff with the snake coiled around it is a characteristic attribute of Asclepius. In the eyes of the ancient Greeks, the snake belonged to the underworld, where the mystery of life and healing lay. The original man-sized statue was found in Epidaurus, the most important sanctuary of Asclepius in the north-east of the Peloponnese. From the 3rd century onwards, it was a very popular place of pilgrimage. Sick people could stay there overnight and present their dreams to the priests the next day. If a snake appeared in their dreams, it was a good sign. The chances of this happening were considerable, as sacred snakes slithered freely across the floors of the infirmaries.

Attributes: sculpture of a standing bearded male figure carved in white stone, shown in a relaxed contrapposto pose with one leg bearing weight, his muscular torso partially draped in flowing garments that wrap around the waist and fall in deep folds; one arm gathers the cloth at the shoulder while the other rests near a vertical staff entwined by a serpent, all set on a simple base, with detailed anatomical modeling, textured hair and beard, and a calm, composed expression that emphasizes balance, harmony, and classical proportion.
