Around 900 BC, a stylistic break occurred in ancient Greek art. Geometric patterns emerged in both decoration and sculpture, bearing no resemblance to the pre-Hellenic style that had prevailed until then. Painters began decorating pottery with stylised, linear silhouettes, a style that was soon adopted by sculptors as well.

The horse proved to be an ideal subject for this innovative geometric simplification. Every bronze workshop on the Greek mainland developed its own variation, yet features such as the “pig snout,” pointed ears, and triangular recesses in the base of the statuette remained characteristic. Sometimes these horses served as decorative elements on vases, but more often they were freestanding sculptures, frequently used as grave markers.
