Work, Rest and Play - Henriëtte Ronner-Knip Collection Figurine - 1896 - Parastone - 6 cm

Henriëtte Ronner-Knip (1821-1909) As the daughter of the famous neo-classical artist Augustus Knip, Henriëtte started painting at an early age. After her marriage to Reico Ronner in 1850, she devoted herself mainly to her family until her husband fell seriously ill. They moved to Brussels, where Henriëtte became the breadwinner, painting mainly animal scenes. True prosperity followed when Henriëtte discovered cats. The bourgeoisie soon queued up to have their salon-worthy pedigree cats portrayed by Henriëtte. She became a European celebrity and the face of “salon art”, so typical of the “belle epoque”.

Attributes: realistic sculpture of a black-and-white cat lying on a decorative red cushion with tassels and floral patterns, with a small kitten resting on the larger cat’s back.
