Many people see one of Bosch's most famous hybrid creatures as a self-portrait. The hollow in the egg-shaped body provides space for a tavern. The bagpipes on the headdress refer to the licentiousness to which music and dance can lead.

Hieronymus Bosch shows how we mortals, sprung from the earthly paradise, are on our way to a gruesome hell through our unchaste lives on earth.

Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450–1516), born Hieronymus van Aken in ’s-Hertogenbosch, was a South Dutch painter of the Northern Renaissance. Nicknamed den duvelmakere (“the creator of devils”), he became known for his satirical and fantastical scenes. Bosch was an innovator who transformed traditional motifs into imaginative new compositions, many of which still puzzle viewers with their mysterious meanings. Celebrated in his own time and even commissioned by the ducal court in Brussels, his life nevertheless remains only partly known.

Attributes: a surreal, intricate sculpture that seems to blend elements of nature, human figures, and fantasy. At the center, a large, hollowed-out tree trunk serves as the base, revealing a small scene with tiny human figures and animals inside. On top of the trunk, a plate-like surface holds additional figures, including a red jug, possibly symbolizing something like an alchemical or mythical object, and several human figures in various poses, some naked, some engaged in different activities. At the very top of the piece, a flag flies, and more figures sit on the structure, including a horse.
