Amidst the many wretched souls who have been impaled, torn open, strangled, or even baked in various ways, the monster in the egg pierced by an arrow steps cheerfully into the center panel.

THE LAST JUDGMENT

Hieronymus Bosch warns us of the consequences of a sinful life. The fall of the rebellious angels on the left panel heralds the beginning of the end. Next, we see a few chosen ones in heaven, with the great rest below them, who must undergo the most terrible tortures on Judgment Day.

Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450–1516), born Hieronymus van Aken in ’s-Hertogenbosch, was a South Dutch painter of the Northern Renaissance. Nicknamed den duvelmakere (“the creator of devils”), he became known for his satirical and fantastical scenes. Bosch was an innovator who transformed traditional motifs into imaginative new compositions, many of which still puzzle viewers with their mysterious meanings. Celebrated in his own time and even commissioned by the ducal court in Brussels, his life nevertheless remains only partly known.

Attributes: surreal figurine of a creature emerging from a cracked egg shell. The creature’s upper body is hidden inside the broken egg, while its lower body is fully visible, with human-like legs covered in white dotted stockings and red boots. The figure’s arms and part of its face can be seen poking through the cracked shell, with large eyes giving it an almost comical, yet eerie appearance. A spike-like object is protruding from the shell, and the figure stands on a simple brown circular base.
