Description

Balzac - Auguste Rodin Collection Figurine -  Parastone - 22 cm

On behalf of the Société des Gens de lettres, Emile Zola commissioned Rodin in 1891 to design a statue of the novelist Honoré de Balzac, who had died in 1850. There was little material available on which to base his portrait, just a few sketches, one photograph, and information about his posture, obtained from his tailor. On the agreed date, the statue was far from finished, but the enormous, naked figure with his thick belly was considered highly shocking by the Société's committee. The clothed version, which was shown ten months later, was described by the clients as an artistically unsatisfactory, shapeless mass. Rodin nevertheless exhibited the design, together with “The Kiss,” in the Salon. The press condemned it, and the statue became the subject of a fierce political battle against the backdrop of the Dreyfus affair. The sculptor, who was not very politically engaged, eventually returned his commission and placed the sculpture, to which he was personally very attached, at the Villa de Brillants, where he was living at the time. He predicted that the work would find its own way and said that this subject of ridicule was the result of his entire life. (1898)

Auguste Rodin (1840-1917-France) Between Romanticism and Impressionism, this idiosyncratic Frenchman created some of the most famous pieces in sculpture.

Attributes: standing human figure rendered in a textured, expressive style, with elongated proportions and a flowing, robe-like garment that drapes heavily around the body. The surface has a rough, sculpted quality that gives the piece a sense of movement and depth, and the greenish patina suggests an aged bronze or similar material.
