Tree Men - Jeroen Bosch Collection Figurine -  Parastone - 14 cm

Many see one of Bosch's most famous hybrid creatures as a self-portrait. The hollow in the egg-shaped body provides space for a tavern. The bagpipes on the headdress refer to the debauchery to which music and dance can lead.

Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450–1516), born Hieronymus van Aken in ’s-Hertogenbosch, was a South Dutch painter of the Northern Renaissance. Nicknamed den duvelmakere (“the creator of devils”), he became known for his satirical and fantastical scenes. Bosch was an innovator who transformed traditional motifs into imaginative new compositions, many of which still puzzle viewers with their mysterious meanings. Celebrated in his own time and even commissioned by the ducal court in Brussels, his life nevertheless remains only partly known.

Attributes: creature that has the torso of a pale, egg-like shell with holes and cracks, from which emerges a human arm and a face with a calm but unsettling expression. Its lower body is made of tree-like legs, one of which is hollow and broken. On its head rests a wide, flat disc hat topped with a bright red, bulbous vessel sprouting spouts, resembling a bizarre alchemical flask or instrument.
