Torso - Auguste Rodin Collection Figurine -  Parastone - 15 cm

‘When a good sculptor models the human body, he not only depicts the muscles, but also the life that activates those muscles.’

When creating a sculpture, Rodin started with the torso, the part of the body where, according to him, all movement originates. This impressive torso with very pronounced muscles was used for three figures in the famous Gates of Hell, of which ‘the falling man’ (‘l Homme qui tombe) is the most striking. The striking wedge-shaped protrusion served to mount the sculpture. Why Rodin left it in place when the torso was later exhibited as an independent work of art is unknown.

Auguste Rodin (1840-1917-France) Between Romanticism and Impressionism, this idiosyncratic Frenchman created some of the most famous pieces in sculpture.
