The ancient Greeks called the cockerel “the Persian alarm”. For them, it was an exotic and precious animal. This is also referred to in Socrates' famous last words: “Crition, we still owe Aesclepius a cockerel. Please do not forget to repay that debt”. Mythology tells the wonderful story of the god of war, Ares, who asks the young Alectryon (the Greek word for rooster) to keep watch while he commits adultery with Aphrodite. Alectryon falls asleep, and the couple is caught by Helios. As punishment, Ares turns the boy into a rooster, who never forgets to announce the dawn.
