Description

Fish with Tower - Jeroen Bosch Collection Figurine -  Parastone - 11.5 cm

On the left panel, this remarkable fish is depicted on dry land with architectural features. It is located just in front of the brothel, one of the temptations that Anthony brilliantly resisted.

THE TEMPTATION OF SAINT ANTHONY

In the days of Hieronymus Bosch, Saint Anthony was greatly admired. He resisted devilish temptations. This is in stark contrast to ordinary mortals, as this triptych in beautiful colors shows.

Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450–1516), born Hieronymus van Aken in ’s-Hertogenbosch, was a South Dutch painter of the Northern Renaissance. Nicknamed den duvelmakere (“the creator of devils”), he became known for his satirical and fantastical scenes. Bosch was an innovator who transformed traditional motifs into imaginative new compositions, many of which still puzzle viewers with their mysterious meanings. Celebrated in his own time and even commissioned by the ducal court in Brussels, his life nevertheless remains only partly known.

Attributes: figurine of a hybrid creature that has the body of a bright red fish or aquatic animal, lying on its side, with two humanlike legs jutting out in front. Its tail is long and curled, resembling a tentacle covered in white spots. Attached to its midsection is a large, circular, shell-like wheel, giving the impression of a cart or moving contraption. From its back rises a tall, black, tower-shaped structure with pointed spires and golden decorative lines, reminiscent of a gothic turret or church steeple. The head is that of a gray fish, with its mouth slightly open and a small horn or fin extending from its snout.
