Head-footer with owl - Jeroen Bosch Collection Figurine - Parastone - 10.5 cm

At the bottom of the left panel of the Hermit Triptych, a head-footer walks among exotic fantasy animals. The anatomical imperfections of the monster are covered by a headscarf. Bosch elaborates here on the classical Greek tradition, where the omission of large parts of the body was considered frightening. An owl is perched on the head of the head-footer. Here, it does not symbolize wisdom, as the owl of Athens does, but deceit and treachery. After all, this bird of prey surprises innocent, sleeping prey in the dark.

THE HERMIT TRIPTYCH

The triptych depicts three early Christian saints who lived in complete seclusion to protect themselves from earthly temptations: on the left, Anthony, who withdrew to the Egyptian desert; in the middle, Jerome in Bethlehem; and on the right, Egidius, who lived as a hermit in southern France.

Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450–1516), born Hieronymus van Aken in ’s-Hertogenbosch, was a South Dutch painter of the Northern Renaissance. Nicknamed den duvelmakere (“the creator of devils”), he became known for his satirical and fantastical scenes. Bosch was an innovator who transformed traditional motifs into imaginative new compositions, many of which still puzzle viewers with their mysterious meanings. Celebrated in his own time and even commissioned by the ducal court in Brussels, his life nevertheless remains only partly known.

Attributes: figurine that has a head shaped like a person, wearing a hood and a robe. The face is detailed with realistic features, and the figure's body is designed to resemble footwear, with the legs and feet forming part of the shoes. Resting on top of the figure’s head is a small, sculpted owl, perched on a bundle.
